Question by guru: feline leukemia positive?
My children and I found a cat at a shelter that we would like to adopt. However, they just had him tested and he came back positive for feline leukemia. The cat is only 1 year old now. Any suggestions… or is this just a kitty that we should pass on?

False positives are not uncommon. Ask a vet, but there is a second more sophistacated test that typically follows a positive on a little 5 mintue test that most shelters use. If it’s the only cat in the house and stays inside and healthy, it should live a fairly long life.
I’ve known families that adopted on FeLv positive cat and then got a second one that was also FeLv positive to save it’s life.
Your vet will have good advice too.

My Feline Leukemia Positive Cat stopped eating.?

Question by Ginni H: My Feline Leukemia Positive Cat stopped eating.?
I’ve had my cat for a little over 2 years now. She was tested positive for Feline Leukemia as a kitten. She’s been doing really great until recently. I took her to the vet for her rabies vaccination a little less than a week ago, and now she won’t even touch her food. She just hides under the bed all day, and drinks water.

I normally feed her all dry food, but I tried to switch to wet food because she wasnt eating. She seems to like the wet food, but will only drink the liquid. If she gets any solid, she’ll immediatly spit it out.

I’ve got a vet appointment scheduled, but I was wondering if there was anything else I could do in order to get my best friend to eat again.
I do not have any other cats in my home.

Hm, we had a cat positive for Feline Leukemia and she never did that. I’m not sure if it has something do to with the illness or not, but you are doing the right thing by taking her to the vet. Do you have any other cats? I only ask since it can spread to them easily.

Your kitten will be difficult to place, but not impossible. I would suggest asking local vets if you could post a modest-sized photo and description of the kitten in their waiting rooms. Most vets allow adoption notices to be placed in their offices.

Dozens of people who care about pets pass through a vet’s waiting room every day. There is a chance that a compassionate person, who is in a position to adopt your kitten, may see your notice and offer to help.

Best of luck!

HELP…My cat took the feline leukemia test today & it was positive.?

Question by susan: HELP…My cat took the feline leukemia test today & it was positive.?
I took her to the vet today for what i thought was a simple eye infection, the doc sugested the feline leukemia test & it was positive, however he told me because she has an infection, come back in once a week for the next 3 wks, and if she is getting better from her infection, we will run the test again, and it might come back negative. Could that be true, can it be postive than negative?

Best answer:

Answer by Crystal
yes it could certainly be true…i think this is something that you should wait out as i see no reason why the vet would lie to you. the infection might somehow be interfering with the accuracy of the results and giving a false positive, which could go away once the infection does. hope your cat gets better! :)

To be on the safe side,I would wrap them in three grocery bags and throw them away after saturating them in rubbing alcohol.

Can a kitten positive for feline leukemia live with an FL-vaccinated cat without infecting it too?

Question by Isolde: Can a kitten positive for feline leukemia live with an FL-vaccinated cat without infecting it too?

Yes. The only way your vaccinated cat can get it is if the infected cat’s blood gets inside of your vaccinated cat’s body.

Beijing, a Feline Leukemia (FeLV) Positive Kitten at Calmar at Best Friends Animal Society

March 8, 2011 by

This is Beijing. She came to Casa de Calmar, Best Friends Animal Society’s Feline Leukemia building, in August 2008. I was volunteering there when I saw this tiny skinny girl with big eyes sometimes popped up and ran through their lobby area. Joni, Calmar’s caregiver, told me they just had her only about a few days before and they just named her “Beijing” that day because that’s where Summer Olympic was held. This super sweet thing loved to play! I had a blast just playing with her. Feline Leukemia (FeLV) is a virus based disease which can suppress the cat’s immune system. Once they tested positive, they are usually the first ones to be put down at shelters and even at vets. But they can live long healthy lives and I heard Calmar had a kitty who lived like 19 years if not 21 years (I can’t remember which, sorry). And also some cats can successfully fight it off, Kitty Motel’s Jessica is an example. She used to live in Calmar, fought it off and moved to Kitty Motel. She’s now a very healthy gorgeous cat and she just donated her blood to a dying cat. Unfortunately, our Beijing has crossed over the rainbow bridge last week. She was only two years old but Beijing’s days were filled with love and happiness. She was surrounded and loved by many amazing people and her beloved Calmar Lobby brothers and sisters.

Question by Nancy Silver: Is there a rescue group in ga that will take Feline Leukemia positive cats that are healty?
I foster cats and two of my foster cats are feline leukemia positive 6 month old kittens. They are completely healthy now. They are extremely playful and very friendly kittens. Where would I find a foster group that has space for this wonderful kittens?

Best answer:

Answer by Roxie
Or maybe someone who only wants one cat would help. I know where my husband works there is a cat who lives there, very comfortably I might add, and he is leukemia positive. He is super spoiled, has toys, nice view, good bedding, food and people during the day. He has become an office cat and can’t infect any other cat.
