Newborn kitten’s mother is sick with Feline Leukemia?

Question by EnglishTea: Newborn kitten’s mother is sick with Feline Leukemia?
What is the chance that the kittens will get sick with the virus as well?
They are just over 1 day old today, and the mother is not on any medication. We already have too many cats, so we can’t keep them, and we’re worried that no-one will want to adopt them.

Answer by Kayty
The chances are very high, unfortunately.
Kittens born with the virus can live a while (a year to a year and a half is average) but eventually they will develop the disease. It can be treated but it is incurable and sooner or later it is fatal.
People may want to adopt a kitten and love it while as long as it survives, but be sure to let them know that its mother had feline leukemia.
Be sure to keep the mother and her kittens away from your other cats.

Your kitten will be difficult to place, but not impossible. I would suggest asking local vets if you could post a modest-sized photo and description of the kitten in their waiting rooms. Most vets allow adoption notices to be placed in their offices.
Dozens of people who care about pets pass through a vet’s waiting room every day. There is a chance that a compassionate person, who is in a position to adopt your kitten, may see your notice and offer to help.
Best of luck!

Pet Care for Kittens in Tampa FL
June 1, 2011 by lake
Taking care of a kitten is not always easy. Anyone who wants to raise a kitten should therefore be prepared by learning about proper veterinary care and pet care before even bringing home the pet in Wesley Chapel, Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Tampa 33613. Nothing should be taken for granted for the good of both the pet and the owner.
The pet owner should identify a full service veterinary clinic or animal hospital in Wesley Chapel, Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Tampa 33613 in time for the arrival of the kitten. The full service veterinary clinic should have an expert veterinarian and should be serving pets like dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, rodents, fish and rabbits with routine check ups, medical consultations, emergency health services, laboratory analysis, medical diagnostics and veterinary surgical procedures including laser surgery. It is likewise recommended that the full service veterinary clinic chosen should be offering pet boarding services for kittens. It will give the pet owner peace of mind to leave the kitten at the animal clinic’s pet boarding facility whenever he or she has to leave town. The kitten will be completely taken care of even if an emergency occurs.
As soon as the kitten arrives, the pet owner should make time to take it to the veterinarian along with its medical records. The veterinarian will give the kitten a thorough check up and will give it the necessary vaccinations and other procedures such as deworming. The schedule for future vaccinations shall also be established. The pet owner is responsible for ensuring that this is followed strictly in order to protect the kitten from distemper, rabies, feline leukemia, feline immunodeficiency virus and other potentially fatal diseases. The veterinarian will then treat the kitten for any parasites such as fleas and ticks. The pet owner should consult the vet on how to keep the home free from these pests.
The pet owner and the pet will be able to spend long and happy years together in Wesley Chapel, Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Tampa 33613 if the pet owner has been properly informed of proper veterinary care and pet care.

In June 2010, American Humane’s Red Star Animal Emergency Services™ team helped rescue and care for 387 cats who were evacuated from an overcrowded and unsanitary animal shelter in St. Marys, Pa. The cats suffered from a variety of painful ailments, including upper respiratory conditions, eye infections and feline leukemia virus (FeLV). We worked alongside the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the Elk County Humane Society, medical teams from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Florida, and a team from PetSmart Charities, Inc. that provided supplies.

Veterinary Care and Pet Care for Kittens and Cats in Tampa FL
May 23, 2011 by lake
Proper veterinary care and pet care for kittens and cats are what would be pet owners in Wesley Chapel, Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Tampa 33613 should learn about first before adopting a feline. Although it is important for a pet owner to be excited and all agog with love for the little animal, that is sadly not enough to ensure the total well being of the pat. There are a lot of practical things that need to be taken care of to prove that love.
One of the important aspects of pet care is toilet training. The kitten or cat should be taught how to use the litter box when indoors. This should be placed in an area far from the feeding and drinking area of the pet and protected from busy human traffic. The litter box should be emptied at least twice a day and thoroughly washed with soap and water at least once a week.
It is very important to take the kitten or cat to the veterinarian for a complete check up once the pet arrives in the pet owner’s possession. The kitten’s medical records should be brought along. The veterinarian will check the records to see if any vaccinations and shots had already previously been administered. Whatever necessary shots will also be given and the schedule for future shots will be noted down. The pet owner should ensure strict compliance with this schedule in order to provide the kitten with full protection from distemper, rabies, feline leukemia, feline immunodeficiency virus and other deadly diseases.
The veterinarian will likewise check the kitten or cat for pests such as fleas, ticks and other parasites. If any are found, they will be treated properly. The pet owner will also be taught how to prevent re-infestation. It is not safe to used repellants available for sale over the counter because these may be toxic to fragile pets.
It will be easier for a pet owner to find a full service veterinary clinic or animal hospital in Wesley Chapel, Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Tampa 33613 before the kitten or cat is acquired. This will ensure that the pet can immediately be brought to the veterinarian upon arrival. A full service veterinary clinic serves the needs of pets like dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, rodents, fish and rabbits. It should be able to provide routine check ups, medical consultations, emergency health services, laboratory analysis, medical diagnostics and veterinary surgical procedures including laser surgery when needed.
It is very much advisable to choose a full service veterinary clinic that also offers complete pet boarding for kittens and cats. The pet owner will then be ready for any trips out of town. Leaving the kitten or cat in its regular animal clinic with pet boarding services will reassure the owner of the pet’s complete safety even if any emergency arises. The kitten or cat will also be less anxious if left in an already familiar environment.
With complete information on proper veterinary care and pet care for kittens and cats, pet owners in Wesley Chapel, Hillsborough County, Pasco County and Tampa 33613 are well equipped to ensure a long and happy relationship with the little fur ball.

Answer by lilykdesign
I am very sorry, there’s no vaccine or anything you can do.
I can tell you that the chances of all the kittens having leukemia is rare. Even if one or two does develop leukemia, chances are they won;t start showing signs until they are older.

Or would the mother get inected during breeding, thus tranferring it to the kittens?
ETA: But the mome would have been infected during breeding, right? So could we just test the mom (who is a stray) and know or would we have to test each kitten?

Kittens meet faucet

Normally we don’t allow the cats (or any other animals) on the table but I knew that our two boy kittens (Odin and Loki) would love the faucet. They did. I am sorry to say that the short haired kitten first seen in the video, Odin, died of Feline Leukemia on August 20, 2009. His brother and litter mate, Loki, disappeared the day after. They are both terribly missed as they were greatly loved.
