My kitten tonka has feline leukimia , he’s happy, playful, healthy . but he cant go outside or be around other kittys that arent feline leukimia positive so is there anything i can do to keep him happy and healthy ,is there anything to help him with his immune system , maybe give it a boost or something , change his diet , and keep him from getting lonly since he doesnt get to socalize with other kittys? anything will help!

Show him lots of love and affection! Since he can’t interact with the other kitties, give him special treats or toys that the other cats don’t get. If you keep him isolated, maybe get him a fish tank – it’s something that will keep him entertained when no one is home. Just do your best to make him feel special and loved.

Cats are usually pretty hardy and robust and most cats and kittens are in good health. In most cases your cat will only have to visit a vet for yearly check-ups and examinations. If you have an indoor cat it is likely they will have fewer health problems than cats that go outdoors. This is because outdoor cats have more exposure to parasites, disease and contact with other animals that could be carrying unwanted ailments.

Vaccinations
If you bring a new kitten home you should protect him from unwanted health problems by getting him vaccinated against some of the common feline diseases. The first major vaccination a kitten will receive is known as FIE and protects against infectious enteritis. Another common vaccination is called FELV, which stands for feline leukemia virus.

Vaccinations can be given when your kitten is still very young. As your cat gets older they will need booster shots. If you have any questions or concerns you should talk to your vet about which vaccinations are right for your pet. You will receive a certificate from your vet after your cat has had their shots. Make sure you keep hold of this certificate because if you decide to board your pet – for instance while you are on holiday – you will have to show proof that your cat has had their vaccinations.

Worms
No matter what breed of cat you may have, worms are a very common and recurring problem in most cats and kittens. Tapeworms, roundworms and hookworms are the most common that infect cats. If your cat has problems gaining weight, problems with fleas or you find white specks in their stool you should have them tested for worms. Worms usually can be treated with oral medication given to your cat over a period of time.

Hairballs
One of the most common cat health problems is hairballs. Cats and kittens groom themselves constantly and swallow the loose hair that comes off of their tongues. Sometimes the hair gathers into a ball and lodges in the cat’s digestive tract instead of passing through the body. The key to dealing with Lyme disease is prevention and early diagnosis and treatment.

Cat Health Problems Explained

Here are some diseases that you should watch for and their symptoms.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is the disease most feared, and in fact, is the leading cause of death in cats. It is caused by a coronavirus infection and the worst is that the symptoms are very common with other ailments, so it’s really hard to tell.

There is also Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) which is similar to HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Like the human version, is a life long infection that moves slowly and can kill the cat.

Cats can also be infected with Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). FeLV is a retrovirus that causes terminal cancerous and noncancerous diseases. Fortunately, you can try using detergent and bleach, as well as warmth and drying to cure the virus. The virus is spread by saliva, tears, urine and feces of an infected cat. Unlike the other two diseases, it will not live that long in the environment and it is contagious only when the infected cat stays with another cat for a long period of time.

Worms are also another problem to cats and this is caused by a fungus infection that is spread by spores. Because it is self-limiting illness, you don’t need to do anything to make it disappear. It will eventually go away, but it may take a few months.

If your cat is overweight, it probably already has feline diabetes. The symptoms of this disease include excessive urination and thirst plus noticeable weight gain or loss. Vets are not sure what causes this, but there have been some scientific studies that have shown a connection  between pancreatic disease, hormonal imbalance and certain medications.

The symptoms of most of these diseases are very similar. These include diarrhea, vomiting, lameness in one leg lasting for longer than 5 days. Also decreased vision, excessive panting, a seizure, blood in the stool or urine, hair loss, and persistent coughing or gagging. To find the proper answer, your cat needs to see a vet to be tested.

Your veterinarian will sample blood, urine and feces. Any input from your observations will also help. When results of the tests are finalized, proper treatment can begin. Keep in mind that each case varies, and what works for one cat may not work for another.

Your cat can remain healthy if given constant attention. This can be done by feeding him high quality food and providing fresh water. In addition, your cat needs proper exercise, grooming, and make sure your pet stays indoors. And importantly, regular visits to the vet.
