What are the signs of feline leukemia?

Question by Sassafrass: What are the signs of feline leukemia?
Best answer:
Answer by Kids&Kitty’s
I really wish I didn’t have any experience with this disease, but unfortunately I do.
My sweetest male cat, Yodi died about a year ago from feline leukemia. I didn’t even really know it existed.
It seems that all of a sudden I started noticing him rapidly losing weight. He still had an appetite, but nothing like it was. He wasn’t going outside anymore and he would usually lay under the beds in the house for long periods of time. He was very lethargic and wouldn’t go near the other cats. I also noticed that the other cats would hiss at him and make attempts to attack him, which the vet told me was normal when a cat is sick or dying.
When I finally got him to the vet, they had just enough time to test him and call me with the results of it being feline leukemia, before he passed away. He was in kidney failure and was suffering. If he hadn’t of died before I got there, I was going to have him put down and hold him until he passed, but he went in his own time.
Please, if you suspect your kitty has feline leukemia, take him to the vet for a simple blood test. Also, if you’ve kept up w/ kitties shots there is a feline leukemia shot to prevent it.
Good luck!! Love on your kitty!!!

Is the feline leukemia/FIV test really needed for a kitten?

Answer by puma
Dear M,
Yes the Leukemia/FIV test is needed for a new kitten especially if you have no idea of where the kitten was born or anything about the mother cat. This is a very deadly disease and a vet I had years ago told me that the virus can be brought in on a humans shoes ect. and the virus can live for up to a year in ones home. So I would have the test done to be sure. When we take on the responsibility of adopting a pet all should be done to ensure its health and safety. Congratulations on your new addition.

Question by c.calmes: Does my cat have feline leukemia?? Or something else?
My vet did a feline leukemia test on my cat and it barely showed up, so slight it was hard to see. She has lost a lot of weight, but still eats. Her fur looks not as pretty also. But how do i know if she really has it or not. She has watery eyes also, and sneezes, i was given medicine to treat that, but it doesnt seem to go away. Other than that she seems really fine. Im really confused. If anyone knows more about this please help with some info. Im really confused! Thanks!!!

Have them do another blood test for it, or to check previous IDEXX/Western Blot tests to see if she’s had it register before.
If she’s got an upper respiratory, she should be on antibiotics to get rid of it. If you see no improvement, have the vet switch to a stronger antibiotic – sometimes they need to do azithromyacin to get rid of a persistent URI.

You can start by upgrading his food! Get the best for your cat. I would also start making him eat as much fruit as he could, even vitamin c pills, you need to boost his immune system so he can fight off what is wrong internally! Make sure he gets alot of sleep and be as friendly as you can to him.
There is alot of research into the efficiency of vitamin C in cancer patients. There is also alot of research into putting the patients into a better mood, and well being to help fight off whats wrong from the inside, they say a smile makes all the difference.
So be good to your cat and get alot of vitamin c in him.

Bless his heart, my two 1/2 year old cat just recently dropped at least 5 pounds, quite quickly, and that worries me because he’s always been a big butterball. He’s still eating, still playing, no fevers, and no respiratory probs. Is this normal?

Answer by Alexandra The Great
“Feline leukemia virus can cause symptoms which mimic many different diseases in cats, often making feline leukemia a frustrating disease to deal with.
Feline leukemia virus is most common in cats which spend part or all of their time outdoors. These are the cats which are at risk of for becoming infected with the feline leukemia virus and for developing symptoms of feline leukemia.
Cats which are housed indoors with no contact with other cats are at little risk of developing symptoms of feline leukemia or becoming infected with the feline leukemia virus.
The feline leukemia virus (FeLV) acts to depress the immune system in infected cats. Symptoms exhibited by infected cats are usually the result of secondary infections which have occurred because the cat’s immune system is too weak to fend off the infection as a normal healthy cat probably would.
Because of the immunosuppressive nature of the feline leukemia virus, symptoms associated with feline leukemia can be quite varied and feline leukemia must be considered as a potential cause of disease for cats with any types of symptoms if those cats are at risk for becoming infected with the feline leukemia virus.
More rarely, feline leukemia virus can cause lymphomas (a type of cancer affecting the lymphatic system) and/or myeloproliferative leukemia (a cancer affecting the bone marrow).”
If you are still in question that your cat has a disease like this, please do not hesitate to take him to the vet. Your companion deserves that from you ![]()
Hope this helps
